We are absolutely delighted to have secured another parcel of the fabulous 100 point 1994 Fonseca - again imported straight from the cellars in Oporto.

The 1994 is the perfect Port drinker's vintage; mature yet still full of life… you can happily drink them this Christmas, or a thirty years from now.  The wine has been stored in perfect conditions since 1994 - the provenance is therefore impeccable and the bottles are in immaculate condition.
 

I rank the 1994 Fonseca in the top three Ports I have ever tasted - alongside 1948 Taylor's and 1963 Dow's.  It really is a wine that needs to be tasted to be believed.

Hold on to your hat. This is the best Fonseca since 1977, and it's probably even better than that classic vintage--more like the breathtaking 1948. Mind-blowing, with masses of color, aroma and fruit flavor. Smells like fermenting berries, boasting loads of crushed grape, violet and berry character. Big, full-bodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish. Tannic and huge, it's a long-term, great Port. Best after 2012. 8,000 cases made.

  We all know the story of Super Tuscan wines, how in the 1970's the likes of Antinori broke the rules and introduced French grape varieties to Italy. Hold on. Re-wind. Quite far, in fact, back to the 1500's when Henry II of France married Catherine de Medici. The French gifted the Medici family some Cabernet vines, which they planted in their vineyards in Carmignano. Carmignano is a tiny 110 hectare appellation in Tuscany, protected from the cold of the north by the Apennines, and from the vagaries of coastal weather by the Montalbano hills, with soils rich in clay and schist. It already had a great reputation for growing local varieties like Sangiovese - by the 1700's it had already been given a protected classification - and it has been blending these with Cabernet varieties for hundreds of years.
