Over the past couple of years many of our clients have been enjoying the outstanding 2010 Pianirossi.  The beautiful 40 acre estate is situated in Maremma, to the south west of Montalcino.  Stefano Sincini purchased the estate over 30 years ago and alongside winemaker Carlo Ferrini, they have overseen the continued improvement in quality.

Pianirossi is an estate that is still somewhat under the radar of most Italian wine lovers, which is just the way we like it to be... so it remains an outstanding bargain!

The 2010 is a beautiful, mature Tuscan blend from a great Tuscan vintage.

 

 

The estates flagship wine is a lovely blend of 40% Petit Verdot, 30% Montepulciano and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.  These grapes combine wonderfully, producing a classic Super Tuscan, with a touch of Bordeaux aristocracy.

'This is a full intensity Tuscan blend that shows thickness, dark extraction and heavy red fruit aromas. Crushed black pepper, leather and wet terra-cotta also fit into this unique aromatic equation. The wine presents a full bodied style with sweet cherry and tangy Indian spice on the close.'

Twelve years on from the vintage, the 2010 is drinking beautifully, with silky soft tannins, ripe fruit and deliciously mature complex aromas and flavours.

  We all know the story of Super Tuscan wines, how in the 1970's the likes of Antinori broke the rules and introduced French grape varieties to Italy. Hold on. Re-wind. Quite far, in fact, back to the 1500's when Henry II of France married Catherine de Medici. The French gifted the Medici family some Cabernet vines, which they planted in their vineyards in Carmignano. Carmignano is a tiny 110 hectare appellation in Tuscany, protected from the cold of the north by the Apennines, and from the vagaries of coastal weather by the Montalbano hills, with soils rich in clay and schist. It already had a great reputation for growing local varieties like Sangiovese - by the 1700's it had already been given a protected classification - and it has been blending these with Cabernet varieties for hundreds of years.
