The Brilliant 2nd Wine Of Chateau Canon - 2016 Croix Canon

Chateau Canon has been on an incredible run of form in recent years and as a result is more popular than ever. Sadly, we can’t all justify drinking Chateau Canon on a daily basis, however their brilliant 2^nd wine, ‘Croix Canon’, represents outstanding value for money. This is a wine that still remains under the radar of most consumers due to its rarity, so we are thrilled to have stocks of the brilliant 2016 vintage.

We firmly believe Croix Canon is one of the best ‘second’ wines in Bordeaux. Calling it a ‘second’ wine is actually doing it a huge disservice. The wine is made with all the same loving care and attention as the Grand Vin, but comes mostly from a single parcel that is dedicated to the wine, along with some barrels that do not go into the Grand Vin.

We tasted the wine recently and it was incredibly impressive, with beautiful purity and polished, ripe tannins. If it was served blind, you would be forgiven for thinking you were drinking the Grand Vin.

We all need Bordeaux like this is our cellar, especially from a legendary vintage like 2016, so our advice is to load up now, on bottles or magnums.

"The 2016 Croix Canon is a blend of 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc this year and matured in 25% new oak. It has a very precise bouquet with blackcurrant, touches of blueberry and subtle mineral aromas, gaining intensity as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, very tensile in the mouth with touches of graphite and tobacco, seguing into a supple and refined finish. It seems very approachable at this stage, but even as a Deuxième Vin, I can see this aging nicely over a decade, possibly more. Drink 2020-2032."

Michel Chapoutier 2020 Sélections Parcellaires

The charming and ebullient Michel Chapoutier, the legendary Rhône producer, has just released his 2020 Sélections Parcellaires , his single vineyard wines , and we were very privileged to attend a tasting with him in London this week. At the risk of sounding clichéd, both the reds and whites were amazing! Chapoutier is incredibly enthusiastic, and loves to talk in great depth about a great many things when it comes to his wines and wine making techniques. His opening gambit was that he doesn't try to make the best wine possible, but instead to reflect the best expression of his terroir! He moved on to say that 2020, a dry, warm vintage, had very similar conditions to those of 2003, a vintage which he freely admitted was pretty awful, with short, bitter wines. However, we were regaled with a lengthy and technical discourse on how his vines have adapted to the changing climate in the intervening years, due largely to the enormous efforts made in biodynamics and non-interventioni

This week we had the opportunity to taste the extraordinary new release from Gaja - the 2018 Barbaresco - with Gaia Gaja at Maccelaio restaurant in London.
